FACT: Doctors say ... 86% of primary care physicians think it
is extremely or very important to reduce the intake of
calories on a low-carb diet. And 63% of primary care
physicians are extremely or very concerned that their patients
following a low carb diet are not reducing their intake of
calories.
Can you lose weight and keep it off without cutting calories?
MYTH: Consumers say ... Over half (52%) of those trying to
reduce their carbohydrate intake believe that they can lose
weight and keep it off long-term by cutting their intake of
carbohydrates, but not cutting
calories.
FACT: Doctors say ... The vast majority of primary care
physicians (76%) feel that a diet that cuts carbs, without
also cutting calories, will not be successful long-term.
Does portion control matter when you are going low carb?
MYTH: Consumers say ... One-third (34%) of those trying to
reduce their carbohydrate intake believe that they do not need
to control portion size.
FACT: Doctors say ... 83% of primary care physicians think it
is extremely or very important to control portion sizes while
on a low carb diet. 61% of primary care physicians are
extremely or very concerned that their patients following a
low carb diet are not controlling their portion sizes as well.
Moreover, primary care physicians overwhelmingly (66%) feel
that portion control is the most effective way to control
calories.
Should people following a low carb diet worry about getting
all of the essential nutrients their body needs?
MYTH: Consumers say ... Over half (55%) of those trying to
reduce their carbohydrate intake do not worry about getting
all the essential
nutrients they need in their diets.
FACT: Doctors say ... 95% of primary care physicians think it
is extremely or very important to get essential nutrients when
following a low carb diet. 45% of primary care physicians are
extremely or very concerned that their patients following a
low carb diet are not getting the essential nutrients they
need.
The results of a Roper ASW consumer survey are
based on telephone interviews with a random sample of adults,
18 years of age and older, living in the U.S. The sampling
frame was a national random digit dialing system (RDDS) that
includes all telephone households in the U.S., both listed and
unlisted. The margin of sampling error for the total sample is
+/- 3 percentage points; for the sample of adults who have
tried to reduce their carbohydrate intake, the margin of
sampling error is +/- 4 points. Interviewing was conducted
February 13-15, 2004.
The results of a PKS Research Partners physician survey are
based on a total of 200 online surveys with primary care
physicians across the United States. Data was gathered
utilizing PKS' national panel of physicians and healthcare
workers. The survey was conducted February 17-20, 2004.
