Day Trip
to Astoria
Page 1 | 2

Continued....
During the winter months snow often covers portions of the Sunset Hwy.  During this part of the journey you'll be in forests and on wide winding roads.  Ten miles from the coast you'll reach your second decision.  Go to the left fork and you'll reach resort town Cannon Beach twenty miles to the south on 101.  Continue on 26 to the right and you'll land in Seaside ten miles later.

Downtown Seaside has galleries, gift shops and food.  We picked up makings for a picnic lunch and continued north to Sunset Beach Lane (Left at the Astoria Golf and Country Club).  One short mile down this road you'll cross over Sunset Lake/River and find yourself driving on white sand next to clear blue ocean.   This is a great romantic picnic spot and provides inspiration to reenact scenes of "From Here to Eternity".  Just remember the Indecent Exposure laws are still in effect!

North, continue north on HWY 101/HWY 26) through Warren and finally Astoria. We recommend staying the night here so you can visit the Museums, Astoria Tower and enjoy the scenery. But if you don't stay, our drive continues East on HWY 30.

Highway 30 follows the Columbia River toward Portland.  Approximately 30 miles East of Astoria you'll come to an intersection (in the middle of nowhere) that says: Johns Beach, turn Left.  There is a Restaurant at the intersection and this is the only clue you get.  Turning left onto the rural road takes you over an irrigation channel.  Make a right after the bridge and keep following the road through the countryside (about three miles) until it ends.  Turn right.  Johns Beach is an 1/8th of a mile on your left and it is ATV heaven.  We hit it at sunset and the view of the river with Mt. St. Helens in the background is spectacular! TOP

Return to HWY 30 and continue east through the cities of Clatskanie, Rainier (Here you can cross over the Columbia River into Longview, Washington and connect with Interstate 5 going north to Seattle or South to Portland), St. Helens and Scappoose to Cornelius Pass, (Watch your speed!  We got pulled over for going 42 in a thirty and didn't even realize we were speeding! Tourists are the revenue base for these small towns).

Make a right on Cornelius Pass, travel 8 miles to West Union and make a Left (East).  Go 2 miles and you'll reach NW 185th.  Turn right and travel 1 mile south to the intersection of 185th and Sunset HWY where you started.
